Roar Of The Rings Starts Sunday

The Roar of the Rings starts Sunday and the at the end of this important tournament, the Canadian Mens and Ladies 2014 Olympic Representatives will be crowned. It's an exciting time for Canadian curling and certainly an exciting time for me, a bonafide curling chronic.

After the long qualifying process to get to this elite tournament, it comes down to 8 mens and 8 womens teams and certainly, whoever gets on a roll will represent Canada. All the teams particpating will have a good chance to get through but for me, I have my favorites. Here's my picks:

Ladies: Final: Homan vs Jones and Homan wins. Although Homan has been beaten by most of the ladies teams participating in this event, I think that Team Homan has the best game out there. If they can get it together and keep it together, they stand the best chance of getting through. But, I can not count out Jones because they are a veteran team and could easily win. I cannot see the others getting through. I am a fan of Team Nedohin but I just cannot see them winning this. Heather Nedohin is great for TV curling...I have always said that...but I just don't know if they can win. The others...great teams but I just don't think so. In the final analysis, Homan is my pick to go to the Olympics...and I really like them. They are an exciting team to watch.

Men: Well, this is a little trickier because of the depth of the men's field. However, I see Howard as the team to beat and by far, the most consistent for a long time. FINAL: Howard vs Jacobs and Howard wins. That is my realistic side talking...if I was speaking from my heart...then Jacobs wins. You can be sure that I will be rooting for Jacobs all the way and if this crew wins, you just know that I will be doing cartwheels around the living room. He will have to peak like he did last year at the Brier to do it. A very real possibility. As for the others, if they get on a roll, they too, can pull it off. However, after all the rhetoric, I am thinking that it is Howard that will be the team to beat.

And, when Sunday comes, you can be sure that I will be watching and stay tuned, I'll be looking to keep you up to dates with my wild and random thoughts as this curling drama unfolds.

Tuesday Ladies

Ron Burgandy. As a booster for the sequel to The Anchorman, Ron Burgandy will be sharing the booth with Vic Rauter, Linda Moore and Russ Howard...commentating the first game of the Roar of the Rings (Olympic Pretrials) on Sunday, Dec 1 at 2 pm. I have mixed feelings about this...as an avid curling fan, I hope that he will not make too much of a mockery of such an important event. At the same time, his presence may have people, who normally do  not watch curling, tune in and of those, perhaps get a few to check out the Roaring Game, and that may well be a great thing. I'll be watching with initial trepidation. But there is one thing I have NO reservations about is the Tuesday ladies League.

Beth Laderoute vs Liz Rouselle. WIN for Rouselle.

Annie Austin vs Deanna Roberts. WIN for Roberts.

Joanna Hammond vs Lucy Ann Trudeau. WIN for Hammond.

Marty Mitchell vs Chantal MacLeod. WIN for Mitchell.

Anita Moran vs Jamie Ellmore. WIN for Moran

Vola Roberts vs Christie Hagger. WIN for Hagger.

FEATURE GAME: Vola Roberts vs Christie Hagger. This was a great game for both squads. Like any typical well-played game, this one went back and forth and was settled only in the last end. Vola Roberts was a late entry in the ladies league and she put together a squad of new and newer curlers. But despite this, this team is gelling and they are gaining momentum. Although down three in the last, these ladies rallied by putting some guards in play and on Kirby Horton's second stone, they attempted to come around the guards and set up some points. Unfortunately, the draw was heavy and mathematically, the game was over. But, regardless of this, the Roberts rink have demonstrated that they have it in them and I have no doubt that they will be right there in the mix before long.

BIG SURPRISE:  Kirby Horton. I have not seen Kirby in the leagues until this year. Kirby is a newer curler but despite the fact that she has not played regular curling (at least for a very long time), this young lady has great style. She can throw the heaters accurately and before long, she is going to be a tough vice to have to curl against. Great start!

STILL LOVIN' THE GAME: Akeshia Trudeau. Akeshia Trudeau plays in two leagues at the BRCC...the Tuesday Ladies and the Wednesday Open 8 Ender. After a great run in the juniors, she was off to school for a while but is now back and not surprisingly, has found her way back to the club. Akeshia is a solid player and she would be formidable if she played more. There is still more competitive curling in her future.

HUGE STRIDES AHEAD: Heather Roberts. I was watching part of the Deanna Roberts / Annie Austin game last night and I noticed Heather making a few shots during this game. Heather has a nice, straight slide and she has no trouble hitting the broom...and consequently makes alot of shots for her skipper. Playing in two leagues has helped Heather enhance her game and it really shows. Terrific results for such a pleasant lady. Great job Heather.

EMBRACING THE HELM: Annie Austin. My beloved wife and pal Annie is full time at the helm for the second year. With a knee problem, Annie uses a stick and throws lead stones but calls the game. Watching her game last night, I could not help but notice how far her strategy game has come. Her choice of shots when considering who had last rock as well as her squad's position on the score board really demonstrated how far her understanding of the game from a skip's perspective has come. With all the games she is getting under her belt (and perhaps her enduring of my TV curling rants), she has a solid plan when she is in a game situation. Great job Annie!

GREAT CURLING ADVOCATE: Vola Roberts. Like I said earlier, Vola has some new players on her crew this year. This is what every club (and curling in general) needs, members who bring new members to the club and introduce them to curling. Thanks alot Vola...the BRCC (and curling) applaude you!

So that's how it was between the sheets for this Tuesday Ladies night. Last night, we handed around the food bank basket and $100.00 was raised. This was just in one evening with more to come. The BRCC ladies are so generous. But no big surprise there!

Monday Mixed

Curling in a diagram. Doesn't tell you everything about the game but I suppose it describes the basics. If you really want to learn about it, you have to play it. You can watch it on TV and you will be able to figure some things out but playing in person is by far the best way to get a handle on the Roaring Game. And that's what they were out doing this past Monday at the Mixed League.

Andrew Ludgate vs Joanna Hammond. WIN for Hammond

Glen Austin vs Gator Fortin. WIN for Austin

Michel Rivard vs Dan McMillan. WIN for McMillan

Ryan Hagger vs Hailey Horton. WIN for Horton

Bob Villeneuve vs Sandy Milroy.  WIN for Villeneuve

Jerry Jensen vs Craig Roberts. WIN for Jensen

FEATURE GAME: No feature game this week as I was not there to see any. But, I do have a Feature Team: Team Gator Fortin. Quite possibly, the most fun team in the league. If you have ever played on a Monday night and not heard Karen Fortin laughing, then I would have to say that you need the batteries on your "Whisper 2000" changed. They do not win every game...in fact I would hazard a guess that their record is 500 in a season which is pretty good! But in terms of having a good time and enjoying each others' company, then this team is 1000! They have been together in the Monday Mixed for several years now and it is teams like this that enhance the Monday Mixed.

ENTHUSIASTIC CURLER: Heidi Lees. Heidi Lees has been curling in the Mixed league for quite a few years. She got her start with Team Kearns and since then has moved to Team Villeneuve. Heidi loves to play curling and she never misses a chance to spare. If you are looking for an enthusiastic curler to fill in, give Heidi a call. She has stepped up her game big time and who can resist that smile?

WELCOME PRESENCE: Marissa Deverell. Marissa has been sparing for Team Villeneuve on a regular basis and it sure is nice to see her around the club. She is a regular at the Ladies spiel and this year in particular, she will be well-practised.

BEST FUR HAT: Mary Shamas. Mary is a regular with Team McMillan. She is a huge curling enthusiast and despite being a very busy lady, she comes out to curl as often as she can. You will know Mary by her fur hat she wears while on the ice. Not only does Mary embrace curling (which she is very good at) but she embraces fashion as well.

So that's how the rocks curled for this past Monday. You will notice that for this week, there is a "pass the hat" thing going around the clubhouse...actually it is a little pink basket. This is a collection for the food bank. As the Christmas season rolls around, we should all be thinking about those less fortunate and look to doing what we can to help.

Thursday Mens

What this article is saying, if it is hard to read: In 1759, the British captured Quebec from the French. There were some Scottish soldiers who used to melt down cannonballs and use them as curling rocks. Who says curling has no interesting history? Curling is an old game and since 1759, it has come a long way. It is now an Olympic sport and the game is at a whole different level. There were no Olympic curlers out last Thursday at the BRCC but, there were plenty of good players and there were definitely lots of good games.

Tod Swan vs Chris Zagar. WIN for Swan.

Ben Lemieux vs Craig Roberts. WIN for Lemieux

Dan Berthelot vs Brian Tonelli. WIN for Berthelot

Dave Mitchell vs Andrew Roberts. WIN for Mitchell

Chris Astles vs Yvon Valiquette. WIN for Valiquette

John Hammond vs Francois Lemieux.  WIN for Lemieux

Tom St Jules vs Keith Rouselle. WIN for Rouselle

Rick Berthelot vs Alain Viel. WIN for Viel

Jim Kendick vs Michel Rivard. WIN for Kendrick

Glen Austin vs Bob Villeneuve.  WIN for Villeneuve

FEATURE GAME: Chris Astles vs Yvon Valiquette. Extremely close game up but in the 8th end, Team Astles needed 2 to tie. By then, the Valiquette squad were in complete defensive mode and were eliminating as many opposing stones as possible. Nonetheless, by the time skips rocks rolled around, there were 3 Valiquette rocks in the house and  Chris Astles had a very difficult double raise tap to get one of his rocks into the house for at least second shot. His rock over curled and wrecked off a front guard. There was no need to throw his last as there was no way to score two points and the game ended there. Regardless of the win or loss, this was a well-played game by both sides and and excellent ending to watch. Chris Astles and his entire team played an great game. Jerry Jensen plays in the vice position and he is an excellent player. Why Jerry has not been scooped up to play Mens Senior Competitive is a mystery. Dave Rainville plays in the second postion and he also makes alot of shots for his skipper. This is no surprise..he has been in the game for alot of years. And in the lead position is Gerard Rainville. an excellent lead in his own right. Gerard is another seasoned veteran and he puts lots of rocks in play to get the end going for his team.

RED BUM AWARDS: Three to give out this week. 1st to Brian Tonelli...tough loss this week. 2nd to Andrew Roberts...when the curling gods are not with you....not to worry guys, happens to everyone...that's curling! And third, as much as it pains me to have to do this, I have to give one to myself. Team Villeneuve gave the Thursday Newfie Bullet a spanking but in our defense, I would like to say that we took it like men!

TIED NO MORE: Team Mitchell. After three consecutive ties (is this a BRCC record?), Team Mitchell posted a win this week. I guess fourth time's a charm!

HAVING AN AWESOME YEAR: Terry Fryer. Terry is no stranger to the BRCC and has played on competitive teams for a while now. This year, Terry has been playing well. In the games that I have watched him play, Terry has made some "humdingers" and either bailed his skip out of a world of hurt or has set up the end! Great job Terry.

ALSO HAVING A GOOD YEAR: Doug Kearns. Our resident legal eagle has been making lots of very nice shots this year. Doug is a fun guy to wither play with or against. This year, I have noticed that Doug is on his game and certainly making a ton of shots to help his team.

UNDEFEATED: The Molson Exers and Team Villeneuve.  The Molson Exers (Team Keith Rouselle) are having a star-studded year. They are absolutely on fire. This might put a target on them but they should receive special mention for the great season they are having thus far. As well, Team Villeneuve is having an excellent year. With Bob away for a portion of the season, Terry Fryer was at the helm so he did his part to help keep the momentum going this season. Great job by all 4 players on both teams.

MADE THE ADJUSTMENT: Tod Swan. With the breakups of the Posties, Tod looked for and found a new squad...Warren Neufeld and Rob Henderson. As far as I know, this is a 3-man crew so if you are looking to play Mens, call Tod. These guys have gelled and are stringing some wins together.

ALWAYS DEALING THE PAIN: Richard Olmstead. Rich loves the game and it shows. He is out there 3 nights a week and he spares whenever asked. He also does alot of maintenance work around the club and is an all around asset to the BRCC. Richard is a member of the current club champion team and often plays in the second position. If you have ever played against Richard, you will have felt the pain that the outcome of his shots inflict.

HUGE IMPROVEMENT: Scotty Smith. Scott Smith has really brought his game full circle. He consistently throws great weight and has become very accurate and focused. Scott is an excellent front end player...and is also a member of the current club champion team.

So that is how the rocks curled this past Thursday Mens. Lots of season left and although this is true, the Men's Closing is now being talked about. That's right, Checks for the Men's Closing are due Dec 1st. Make sure to get your checks in ($240.00). Don't lose your spot!! The BRCC Mens Closing is the premiere event of the season...not to be missed!!

Wednesday Open 8 Ender

I know what you are thinking. Is Michel Rivard looking after any other ice than the BRCC's? Well, that's not him. But, Michel is the Ice Chairman at the BRCC and it is our good fortune to have him and his ice crew. They work hard on the ice and for those of you that don't know, they work on the ice 7 days a week. You will have noticed that the speed of the ice has been outstanding for the entire season thus far. These guys put alot of time, effort and thought into this and they deserve our kudos. And there were 4 sheets full of curlers enjoying the fast ice last night at the Wednesday Open 8 Ender. Here's your results:

Ryan Hagger vs Lucy Ann Trudeau. WIN for Hagger.

Al Viel vs John Topash. WIN for Viel.

Warren Neufeld vs Tom St Jules  WIN for St Jules

Glen Austin vs Hailey Horton  WIN for Austin

FEATURE GAME: Warren Neufeld vs Tom St Jules. This was a back and forth match from what I could see but the St Jules rink were sharp and it seemed that the Neufeld Factor was chasing throughout. And that's saying something when you consider that the Neufeld squad are a tough crew who win most of their games. But it was Big Daddy and his squad that prevailed in this one. They were strong from lead to skip. Ray Quenville plays lead for this squad and he curls with a stick. Over time, Ray has mastered the stick and he makes alot of shots. Then there is Helen Rancourt. This lady is so nice and she has improved so much. She makes a ton of shots for her skip. And Big Daddy was rockin' it as well. He was making double take outs with rolls...just tough to deal with their game. Sometimes when the curling stars align for a team, there can be no catching them.

SHOULD HAVE BEEN THE IVORY SOAP GIRL: Helen Rancourt. Helen is super friendly and a very sincere individual. And she is a wonderful sport. 99 and 44/100s pure just like Ivory Soap!

OUTNUMBERED 3:1 BY WOMEN: Dawson Kluding. Dawson plays with Team Hailey Horton on Wednesday nights. Being that he is the only male on this crew, Dawson quietly goes about the business of making shots and sweeping rocks taking direction from the three women. Smart man! He may be a perfect candidate for marriage when the time comes!

EXCELLENT SPORT: Brian Tonelli. Our Friendly Giant plays twice a week, on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Brian loves the Roaring Game and although he may not win all of them, he can usually be counted on for a good close match. More importantly, Brian is a great guy and always a pleasure to play against and hang out with after.

ANOTHER IMPROVED CURLER: Natalie Bray. Natalie is playing in the Tuesday Ladies as well as the Wednesday league this year. She has improved greatly and she demonstrates excellent weight control which is what you need in a lead. Great job Natalie.

FIRST RATE FIT AT THE BRCC: Brian St Pierre. Brian is the club employee and I have just come to know him this season. I work closely with Brian and he is a perfect fit for the BRCC. He is personable and does a good job around the club. A pleasure to have this guy around.

STILL MAKIN' IT WORK AT THE BRCC: Ron Forest. Ron has been a member of the BRCC for a very long time. More than that, he has been a great help to the club for a very long time. When we play our games, we should bear in mind that it is partially due to Ron's dedication to the BRCC that we can enjoy having good ice to play on. Thanks alot Ron! There are also others like Warren Neufeld and Ricky Albert that also contribute vast amounts of time to the club. We could not have such a cool operation without the efforts of these fine people.

So that's how it all shook out this past Wednesday. With Xmas just around the corner, you might be wondering what to get that special someone. Well, if they are a curler, then curling supplies is always a great option. The BRCC has a plethora of nice brooms as well as a variety of shoes. Also, lots of gloves and grippers that ALWAYS make great stocking stuffers.

Don't forget about the Santa Claus parade on Friday evening. The BRCC has a float in it! And midnight madness right after. Remember...shopping local is the way to go!

Tuesday Ladies

I know what you're thinking. What is Nathan Mutch doing "elephant curling"? And does he have a twin brother? Well, that's not him. Nathan likes curling with regular curling stones and like most of us, would find it difficult to put a good handle on a rock by using the elephant's trunk. Nathan plays in the  Monday Mixed as well as the Thursday Mens. He plays in the second position in both leagues and has stepped up his game considerably. Because he enjoys the game so much, he has been much more consistent in hitting the broom and controlling his weight whether throwing a draw or a take out. As well, he is developing a better understanding of strategy which really, is a natural progression for those who have been bitten by the curling bug. Nathan can only improve as time goes on and before long, it would not surprise me to see him skipping his own crew. But it's not only Nathan who is growing in the Roaring Game, there were lots of ladies at the club last night who also aspire to curling greatness and they were out there last night in the Tuesday Ladies. Here's your results:

Jamie Ellmore vs Lucy Ann Trudeau. WIN for Trudeau

Liz Rouselle vs Chantal MacLeod. WIN for Rouselle

Marty Mitchell vs Anita Moran. WIN for Mitchell

Deanna Roberts vs Beth Laderoute  WIN for Laderoute

Annie Austin vs Christie Hagger  WIN for Hagger

Vola Roberts vs Joanna Hammond  WIN for Hammond

FEATURE GAME: Deanna Roberts vs Beth Laderoute. I only caught the tail end of this game but it was neck and neck the whole way through. In the final end, Team Roberts found themselves 1 down without the hammer but with a stone sitting second shot. For her last, Deanna had to choose between a run back double or a difficult back line / hack weight come around tap to sit 1st and 2nd shot which would have left Beth Laderoute a tough draw for the win (there was alot of junk out in front so draws would have been tough). Deanna opted for the come around tap and was just a hair heavy and her rock did not curl at the end and she just ticked the opposing shot stone. She might have missed but only just barely. It was an excellent attempt at a very difficult shot. Nonetheless, a great game and a great finish for these two teams.

HAVING A GREAT SEASON: Team Laderoute. This squad has been together for a few years and they are having a great season this year. With only 1 or 2 losses (I'm not sure which) this season thus far, the Laderoute crew are sitting near the front of the pack, if not in a tie for first place. These ladies are the nicest sort and I'm happy to see them doing well. Keep it up ladies!

FOUND THEIR MOJO: Team Rouselle. After a bumpy beginning, Team Rouselle has found their groove and are stringing the wins together. Liz Rouselle et al are veterans in the Tuesday Ladies and are usually found near the top of the leader board. I expect that this is where they are headed again.

LIVING AT THE CLUB: Lucy Ann Trudeau. No, Lucy is not actually living at the club but she spends an awful lot of time there. Lucy plays in all three leagues and coaches Team Hailey Horton (Bantams). Lucy is a fellow curling chronic and has embraced the Roaring Game with absolute fervor. If the club ever shut down, Lucy would be first in line at the support group.

GROWING IN THE GAME: Nicole Mutch. Nicole is a newer curler and curls regularly in the Monday Mixed. Last night she was out sparing in the Tuesday Ladies. This is always indicative of someone enjoying what they are doing and it seems apparent that Nicole has also been bitten by the Curling Bug and looks to play more. She had developed her delivery and there can be no doubt that with her enthusiasm and willingness to play more, she is going to move forward in the game and will find herself in the groove. Another of those naturals, I think.

So, that's it for another Tuesday. Don't forget that this Friday, November 22nd, there will be a Santa Claus parade and then midnight madness after ward. I should mention that alot of local businesses contribute generously to the BRCC as well as other organisations around town. That is why shopping locally is always a good idea. Keeping our local businesses healthy keeps the town healthy. ALSO, the BRCC will have a float in this years Santa Claus parade. Come out and watch...you'll see some BRCC little rockers bantams, and I imagine, some adults on that float.

Monday Mixed

Well folks...this confirms it! Elvis is not dead. The King is busy on Fremont Street in Vegas showing people the fundamentals of curling and I must say, the one-piece curling outfit might be a compliment to the game.....and then again, maybe not. One thing is for sure, I won't be ordering my one-piece anytime soon....Thank you, thank you very much This is part of the initiative to let everyone know about the Continental Cup of Curling coming to Vegas Jan 16 - Jan 19, 2014. And right now, there are 16 Blind River people attending this event and we are all stoked. And there were some stoked people at the BRCC last night for the Monday Mixed. In fact, all the sheets were full for the first draw and three out of the four sheets were full for the second draw. Awesome night at the BRCC. Here's your results:

Sandy Milroy vs Jerry Jensen. WIN for Jensen

Ryan Hagger vs Craig Roberts. WIN for Hagger

Glen Austin vs Hailey Horton. WIN for Horton

Andrew Ludgate vs Bob Villeneuve. WIN for Ludgate

Dan McMillan vs Andrew Roberts. WIN for McMillan

Michel Rivard vs Gator Fortin. WIN for Fortin

FEATURE GAME: Glen Austin vs Hailey Horton. This match was close the whole way through. With some key shots made by the teacher/student combination (Team Horton), the Monday Newfie Bullet was forced to a second place finish. The game looked like it was going to bust wide open in the fifth end with Team Austin lying 4. Horton was staring down the likelihood of giving up 4 with the possibility of 5. Hailey Horton threw her first to either run back her own rock or straight peel it. This was a long run back and she made it good, taking out the opposing second shot stone and sitting second shot herself, buried. Austin's last come into the top eight forcing Horton into a difficult come around draw to the button just to score. The shot was absolutely outstanding and she drew the button around a top eight guard and scored her one. These two shots were game-savers and game changers. Horton eventually went on to take another 3 in 7 and ran Team Austin out of rocks in 8. A well-played and well-thought out game for Team Horton and a much-deserved win. Julia Horton is by far among the best woman sweepers I have seen out there at the BRCC. Both Guy Ratte and Martin Aubin have come a long way in their game. Excellent weight control. Their draw weight set up most ends for their skipper. This was an excellent team effort by Team Horton all the way around. Great job!

OOPS! RED BUM AWARD COMING!: Red Bum Award for Team Villeneuve. Team Ludgate was in the curling zone last night and handed Team Villeneuve a loss. Stephanie Stoker was lights out and helped her skipper secure the win. With Bob just getting back from a couple weeks in the Florida sun, he'll be getting his curling mojo back straight-away and looking for redemption.

LOUDEST PANTS: far and away,....Kristy Blanchet. Making Team Norway blanche in comparison, Kristy was sporting some real colourful curling pants last night. Kristy can always be counted on for some good fun at the BRCC and last night was no exception. Her pants (and I do hope she keeps wearing them) appeared to be a combination of camouflage and quilting material. It was like some ladies got sick of making quilts and made a pair of pants instead! Kudos to Kristy on her lack of codependency!

BITTEN BY THE CURLING BUG: Amanda MacDonald. That's right, Amanda is new to curling this yea and is loving the Roaring Game. She curls with Team Deanna Roberts in the Tuesday Ladies but looks for other games in other leagues so she can improve. Although she is a new curler, she has developed a good delivery and has weight control. She is a natural to the game and can only improve as time goes on. She's another new curler to watch for...she's going to be making her mark.

So that's how the ice curled for a Monday Night. Just another fun night at the BRCC. But that's how it rolls at the club and as the Jack Frost gets ready to cast us into another 4 month deep freeze, it'll always be warm inside the doors of the BRCC!

Thursday Mens

And after that awesome final to the Canadian Open concluding yesterday in Medicine Hat, I offer this haiku to the Goosh:

'playing the best you play
anticipating the greatest of victories to come
to be pummeled by greatness'

That is my first haiku ever...let alone my first curling haiku. In that charged final between Koe and Gushue, it was neck and neck the whole way and needing the steal in 8 to win it, Gushue had it set up as good as he could have, leaving Koe a low percentage in/off to secure the win. And wouldn't you know it, Koe made it and won the Canadian Open. And he deserved to win because of it but I cannot take it away from Tean Gushue, this squad has come into their own and they are playing good curling these days. If the curling haters out there don't think there is drama in the Roaring Game, they know nothing of the sport because that final is about as good as it is going to get.

But there is also shades of greatness in the Thursday Mens as well. There were lots good games played. Here's the results I know about:

Andrew Roberts vs Yvon Valiquette. Win for Valiquette

Tod Swan vs Dave Mitchell.  WIN for Mitchell

Francois Lemieux vs Bob Villeneuve. WIN for Villeneuve

Rick Berthelot vs Craig Roberts. WIN for Roberts

Ben Lemieux vs Al Viel. WIN for Viel

Glen Austin vs Chris Zagar. WIN for Austin

Dan Berthelot vs John Hammond. WIN for Hammond

Brian Tonelli vs Jim Kendrick. WIN for Kendrick

FEATURE GAME:  Kendrick vs Tonelli.  Quite likely a candidate for the longest game in recorded history, this match was a squeaker all the way through and came down to the last stone. Our Friendly Giant had last rock in the 8th (the score was tied) and had a take out to win it all. However, his rock over curled a bit and that was the end of it. Team Kendrick posted the win. Team Kendrick is one of those teams that certainly has the potential to be among those at the top of the leader board. Jim Kendrick is a solid player and he has Dennis Roberts as his third. In the front end, they have newer curler Matt Gosselin and at second they have Darren Rainville.  Darren has been in the game for a few years now and he can make alot of shots. So, it will be no surprise to anyone if this squad moves through the leader board and finds itself near the top.

IMPROVED PLAYER: Hassan Azzi. I played against Hassan and the Craig Roberts rink (I spared for Rick Berthelot) last Thursday, Hassan makes alot of shots in the lead position. He has good control of his weight and is mastering the art of hitting the broom. Hassan is also a solid sweeper. When he is asked to sweep, every ounce of his being appears to go into every brush stroke. Awesome improvement.

ANOTHER IMPROVED PLAYER: Kyle Murray. Kyle is quickly becoming a fantastic lead. His weight is super-consistent and as far as sweeping skills, if left alone, this guy could take it down to the cement! Hard on the broom head perhaps, but easy on the skipper!

ANOTHER AWESOME LEAD!: Nick Roscoe.  In our game last Thursday, against Team Zagar, I noticed the consistent shot-making by Nick Roscoe. Absolutely first rate weight control. This guy was in it the whole way and put rocks in play for his skip every single end. This guy is an excellent lead.

So that's it for another Thursday. With December just around the corner, there are several teams that are either undefeated or right up there near the top of the leader board. It is getting interesting now to see how the leader board is looking at the Xmas break. lots of matches to go yet but teams are making their marks already.

Chronically Catching Up

Kevin Martin. This squad looks pretty good this season with the addition of David Nedohin. And  now there is another addition.....Brad Gushue! Yep, that's right folks, Kmart has recruited the Goosh for a 5th in the Roar of the Rings and perhaps the Olympic Games. This keeps Gushue's Olympic hopes alive...somewhat. Gushue is a very accomplished and talented player so it is a smart move by Martin to get him on board. Gushue does not expect to play in the Roar but he will be there for support and fill in is necessary. I saw mixed responses to this announcement, but let's face it, Gushue can play any position and who else would you want in a 5th position. Of course, many would say that my opinion is biased given that I am a Gushue fan, but hey, if you take that and put it to one side, you still end up with Martin finding himself an excellent 5th. Kudos to him.

In local BRCC curling, once again I have fallen behind with results from the leagues. But this week, I thought I would examine each of the 4 leagues and pick up with the results next week.

There are 5 leagues (not counting the bantam / little rockers that meet every Tuesday afternoon). They are the Monday Mixed, Tuesday Ladies, Wednesday Afternoon Seniors League, Wednesday Open 8 Ender and the Thursday Mens. That makes the BRCC a busy place Monday to Thursday.

The Monday Mixed League is a fun league that does not post results and keeps everything light. For many newer curlers, this league is an excellent entry point to the Roaring Game. There are presently 13 teams in this league and several of these teams have been together for quite  a few years. For some players that curl competitively, this league provides a night of practice in a game situation. For others, it is a night out for some fun. And fun it is, this league may be for fun...but there are lots of good teams and there are many good, close games that go on. One team I would like to point out is Team Andrew Ludgate. This is a new team comprised of new curlers and experienced curlers. Andrew Ludgate skips this squad and this would be his first year in the skip's position. This will serve to further his game by forcing him throw a greater variety of shots and also to get a better understanding of game strategy. They may not be the toughest team in the league, but they will undoubtedly become tougher as time goes on. This squad is a perfect example of coming out to have a fun game and learning all at the same time. I played against them this past Monday and I liked the way they rolled. Brian Welsh is on this team and he has been in the game for a few years now. He is supportive of his skip and he makes lots of good shots. Great squad all the way. Another team that impresses me is Team Andrew Roberts. Andrew's growth in the game is exponential. He is enthusiastic and plays a good game. Never a pushover. His teammates are also good curlers. Natshia Hallett is often in the vice position and she makes a ton of shots. She is a newer curler but is a natural. Then there is Dennis and Deanna Roberts who are fellow curling chronics. The league is blessed to have these people in the league...their enthusiasm and love for the game enhances the league. There are many other teams in this league that do the same thing. They play good curling, have lots of laughs and encourage the newer players. This league is a gem. By the way, the conveners for this league are Brian Welsh and Stephanie Stoker. Thanks alot.

The Tuesday Ladies League is nothing short of awesome. As I have said many times, a strong ladies league is critical for a small club. There are 12 teams in this league and they have maintained their numbers for several years now. The BRCC ladies contribute to the club in so many ways. They help out during bonspiels and they participate often in events. This league is fun to watch. Lots of good teams. This league does keep track of the wins and losses, have their own trophy and a banquet at the end of the season. The leaderboard is always jammed at the top with tough teams vying for top spot. There are veteran squads and newer teams in this league and over time, I have seen teams (and individual players) progress. I do rue the fact that there is presently no competitive ladies squad as the talent pool in this league is certainly deep enough to have one..,but these ladies are also busy with other things in their life and it is just not there right now. But that is not to say that it won't happen sometime down the road. There is, however, a junior ladies team that plays regularly in this league (with Joanna Hammond). This is a bonus for these young ladies as they are afforded the opportunity to compete and improve. Just another way how the Tuesday Ladies League contributes. Marty Mitchell has just rejoined this league after a multi-year hiatus. With Marg Tivy stepping back from the game, Marty has taken over the helm for the Iron Bridge Belles. She lives in Blind River but is originally from Iron Bridge so that still counts! Chantal MacLeod has a team in this year and I fully expect that these ladies will get some momentum and give the titans of this league a run for their money. Then there is Team Jamie Ellmore. A newer team comprised of newer players. This squad is the convener of the league (thank you ladies!) and although they don't win all the time, they are content to go out there and do their best and here is another example of newbies growing in the game. Jamie is at the helm and she is learning as she goes. If this squad sticks together, they will be racking up lots of wins before long. Team Beth Laderoute is having a heck of a season and I expect to see them hovering near the top of the leaderboard throughout the season. And then there are my beloved Rez Girls. Last year, they had a good run and stayed near the top of the leaderboard for most of the season but ran out of gas early and lost a few at the end. But these ladies are awesome. They win lots of games and I expect another great season from them. The Tuesday Ladies is fun to watch. Many nights I am at the club on Tuesdays and I watch a few ends. Always entertaining and it is refreshing to see these ladies out there enjoying themselves.

The Wednesday Afternoon Seniors League is a pick up league. Many who play in this league also play in other leagues but they enjoy showing up on a Wednesday afternoon and playing a pick up game. Great afternoon activity for our seniors and for those who are not members, pretty cheap afternoon as Wednesday afternoon spare fees are only $8.00.  In this day and age, pretty hard to find something to do for eight bucks!

The Wednesday Open 8 Ender is a newer league...just 2 years old. This league used to be the Wednesday Mixed League and had a title change just last year. Initially, people were thinking that this would be a competitive league but that is not the case. It is just a name change but it is still a fun league. Wins / Losses are not recorded and the league is generally the same as the Monday Mixed with the exception that there can be any mix of player genders. This is also another great league to play in if you are just entering the game. Presently there are 8 teams in this league but there is lots of room for expansion. Al Viel, another of those BRCC mainstays, looks after this league.

The Thursday Mens League is still a big league at the BRCC with 21 teams. It spills over to a second night to get all the games in each week. This league was originally run by Dave Mitchell (for years!!..thanks alot Dave) but of late is being run by Brian West. This league is absolutely awesome! There are many good teams in this league and you can be sure that Thursday nights are a busy night at the club. lots of good games and lots of great shot-making. It would be fair to say that many players come to this league from other leagues and step up their game. Players like Craig Roberts, Andrew Roberts, Chris Zagar, and Hassan Azzi name just a fraction of them. Some players come into this league as new players and that's all good. The competition level is higher in this league and that is no bad thing. Here is a perfect opportunity for any squad to enhance their game and that is just the thing that happens in this league. With so many tough teams, those that start off being beaten regularly learn a thing or two and before long, start dealing out some red bums of their own. A great example of this is Team Michel Rivard. When this team got together a few years ago, they may have lost more than they won but these days, they are a solid team. They have lots of close games and are a fun team to play against. This league demonstrates the great camaraderie associated with curling. Bragging rights (on the lighter side) are rampant and this just adds to the fun of this league. I have played in many mens leagues over the years in several different clubs but this league, is by far, the best league I have ever participated in. I enjoy the company of the participants and I enjoy the games. The banter in this league is above and beyond. I look forward to my Thursday nights...as I am sure many others do as well. The current club champions in this league is Team Dave Mitchell. This squad has played together forever, and they are an awesome squad. They are also one of the teams to beat so let me be the first to provide them with targets!

So that's it for the leagues of the BRCC. If you are not a member but read this blog, you are missing out. The BRCC is always looking for new members and welcome anyone who wants to come give it a try. The fees are cheap and the people are excellent. Never a dull moment. Come see for yourself!

Roar Of The Rings Field Is Now Complete

And on this day, it is paramount to remember and pay tribute those who gave their lives so that we might enjoy the lifestyle that we have today. And honor those veterans that are still with us. This is their day, first and foremost.

With the Road to the Roar now complete, two womens teams and two mens teams are going through to the Roar of the Rings. On the womens side, it was Team Sonnenburg and Team Sweeting. Rene Sonnenburg is no stranger to the big stage. She was at the Scotties in 2001 and 2009. Sweeting was at the Scotties in 2010. They will have their hands full when they meet the other six in Winnipeg, Chelsea Carey, Jennifer Jones, Heather Nedohin, Rachel Homan, Stephanie Lawton and Sherry Middaugh.

On the Mens side, it was Team morris and Team Jacobs. morris qualified out of the A with a win over Gushue and then in a barnburner last night, Gushue was upended for a second time by Jacobs and the team from Sault Ste Marie will join the others in Winnipeg. The other six are Kevin Koe, John Epping, Glen Howard, Kevin Martin, Jeff Stoughton and Mike McEwen. hard to pick a winner out this pack...it will be whomever is peaking at the right time.

Olympic trials begin December 1st.

More Pretrials Action

So Team Morris has made it through and has qualified out of the A Event with a convincing win over Gushue last night. As much as I wanted to see Gushue win this game, I am not surprised that Team Morris is through. After all, Team Morris is a good squad. Jim Cotter is an excellent rock chucker and he is, by now, a seasoned veteran on the circuit. Can they hang on...well, we'll see but if they do get through to the Roar of the Rings, it should surprise no one. As for Gushue, well, he has a tougher road now...he will have to meet Team Jacobs at 2 pm today to try to qualify out of the B Event and the winner of that match up will play the winner of Steve Laycock and Greg Balsdon in the B Event Qualifier final. The losers are not out but will get on an even tougher road in the C Event.

On the women's side, Krista McCarville is out. However, Tracy Horgan is still in there. With a loss to Rene Sonnenburg last night, Horgan will play against Laura Crocker in the C Event. Any more losses now and that will spell the end of this squad's Olympic hopes. It was Kelly Scott who qualified through the A side with a win over Sonnenburg. Sonnenburg will play Cathy Auld in the B Qualifier final today. In the C side, there are still several teams left, like Cheryl Bernard, Valerie Sweeting, Crystal Webster and Shannon Kleibrink. Once again, any more losses for either of these squads will end their hopes for a spot in the Roar.

Today will be a big day in this tournament. For some, hopes will still be alive...for others, an end to Olympic hopes. For some, perhaps this is the last Olympic try while others will begin to look ahead to the next Olympics in 2018. But most, if not all, will be looking ahead to the Brier and the Scotties and that is something that is always worth looking forward to.

Blind River Local Businesses Are Awesome

Team Horton (BRCC Junior Ladies team) would like to thank Transcan Service Center for their donation to their team. It's greatly appreciated!
Team Villeneuve (BRCC Senior Mens team) would like to thank Dave Mitchell and Mitchell Pharmacy for the generous donation of the team jackets.

Blind River local businesses are awesome. They give back to the community in so many different ways. Just another reason why shopping local makes so much sense!

Wednesday Open 8 Ender

Johnny Mo. He shocked the curling world last spring with his departure from Team martin, thus foregoing his spot in the Roar of the Rings Olympic Trials. But, he just wasn't feeling it anymore and felt a change is what was required. So, he is now skipping a BC team with Jim Cotter. And here he is, playing in the Pretrials and with the win over Team Balsdon last night, will be playing against Team Gushue in the A Qualifier. Team Gushue, with their win over Jake Higgs last night (in what was reportedly a sloppy game on both sides) will have to hold it all together to move on to the playoffs. In other action last night, Team McCarville slipped to 2 - 1 with a loss to Kelly Scott in a squeaker. Scott will go on to play the A Qualifier against Rene Sonnenburg, who beat Laura Crocker in the A Semi final. Sudbury's Tracy Horgan moves on in the B event beating Barb Spencer soundly. So, today will mark day 3 of the Pretrials and things are starting to come into focus. Brad Jacobs will hit the ice this afternoon vs Kean. A win here and the Jacobs crew will move on to the B Final. But all the action was not only in Kitchener last night. The BRCC was hosting some action of its own at the Wednesday Open 8 Ender. All the sheets were full and everyone was out there giving it their all.

Ice A: Hailey Horton vs Al Viel. WIN for Viel. With Al Viel out chasing deer, Danny Horton was at the helm and while they posted the win, Team Viel had all they could do to hold off the assault of the juniors. Danny Horton is a longtime member of the BRCC. He is quite an asset to the club. He helps out around the club but he is also one of the more popular spares. There is not a week that goes by that he is not asked to spare for someone. And there is a reason for that...he is a good player and also, he makes himself available in any position. Great guy to have around. For him, it's the "I'll Be There" Award. Enough to make the Jacksons knock off the singing and form a team.

Ice B: Glen Austin vs Warren Neufeld. WIN for Neufeld. This was an entertaining game with lots of nice shots made throughout. The Neufeld rink is a tough squad. They have talent from bottom to top and they were all executing last night. Rob Henderson was on fire. I was particularly impressed with the lead from this crew, Sharon Hamelin. Sharon is new to the BRCC but she is definitely no stranger to the Roaring Game. With a solid delivery style, it is no surprise that she was making takeouts and draws with equal enthusiasm. It's the "back In The New York Groove" Award for her. The band Kiss might be inspired to clean off the face makeup and put on some curling jackets.

Ice C: Ryan Hagger vs Tom St Jules. WIN for St Jules. Big Daddy and his squad continue to be tough to get by, posting a win yet again this week. Ray Quenville is a member of the St Jules crew and has been for some time now. He plays with a stick and has, over time, made his stick-curling prowess quite the weapon. It's the "Powerman" Award for Ray. I'm sure the Kinks would have to agree.

Ice D: John Topash vs Lucy Ann Trudeau. WIN for Topash. Tough night for the Trudeau squad as they were in tough against the Topash rink who seemed to be firing on all cylinders. Rick Roberts plays for the Trudeau rink. Rick is a veteran curler, he's been in the game for a long time. Not only is he a good curler and a great team player, he is also a good dancer. Rick's got all the moves and even can be seen doing a bit of Dirty Dancing from time to time. it's the "Patrick Swayze" Award for him. I wonder if his girlfriend's name is Baby?

Well, that's it for another Wednesday night of curling. I enjoy this league. It is unfortunate that there is only 1 draw. There is lots of room for a second draw so if you are looking to play in a good league next season, this could be the league for you!

Tuesday Ladies

Krista McCarville. Have not really seen much of her for some time but here she is with her Thunder Bay squad, in the thick of things at the PreTrials in Kitchenr. As I type this, the McCarville rink sits at 2 - 0 with their second win coming this morning over Cheryl Bernard (6 - 5). I have always liked this squad and I would certainly not be disappointed to see them secure a berth in the Olympic Trials. In other ladies' action this morning, the Tracy Horgan rink from Sudbury went into the 10th end in a 6 - 6 tie with Laura Crocker but gave up 4 in the last to lose 10 - 6. They will have to regroup. BC's Kelly Scott rink won over Alberta's Kleibrink squad (6 - 5). And finally, Manitoba's Barb Spencer lost to Alberta's Team Sonnenburg 9 - 4. Sonnenburg has been around for a few years now, with her first Scotties appearance in 2001 in Sudbury. More Pretrials action to come. But there IS other action to report and it's the Tuesday Ladies. They might not be in the Pretrials, but if there was an Olympic event for awesomeness (is that a word...well it is today!), our BRCC belles would be gold medallists!

Ice A: Annie Austin vs Beth Laderoute. WIN for Austin. That's three in a row for my beloved Rez Girls. After a slow start, they got a head of steam goin' and they are racking up the wins...and moving up the leader board at the same time. It's the "Movin' Up" Award for them. Enough to make Billy Joel want to stop plinkin' the piano and start poundin' some rocks!

Ice B: Christie Hagger vs Chantal MacLeod. I don't know what happened with this game but both squads are capable of the win so it could have gone either way. Stephanie Stoker plays on this team. She has been playing for a few years now and she plays twice a week, in the Monday Mixed and the Tuesday Ladies. She is a very likable lady and helps out at the club. She is co-convener for the Monday Mixed. It's the "helping Hand" Award for her. Amy Grant would be proud.

Ice C: Deanna Roberts vs Anita Moran. WIN for Roberts. Great night for the Roberts squad, knocking off a tough team. Bit of a slip for the Moran crew who have been experiencing a bit of a slump in the past couple of weeks. But that should not really concern them, they are a great team and there can be no doubt that they will rebound in a big way. It's the "Walk Right Back" Award for this crew. Enough for Anne Murray to grab a broom and hit the sheets.

Ice D: Marty Mitchell vs Joanna Hammond. WIN for Hammond. The Iron Bridge belles were forced into second place by the tough Hammond squad. It's been a great start for Team Hammond and they will be tough to get past. Tamarra Benke plays for this crew and she also play on Monday and Wednesday nights as well. She plays for the Junior Ladies competitive team and is quite the young curler. She is at the club alot of the time during the week and her bubbly personality makes her a great addition to the club as well as to her team. And she has game. I would have to say that if this young lady stays in the game, she will go far. She has the right outlook and she dedicates her time to improving her skills. So, It's the "Dream big" award for her. David Cook would be sure to be behind this.

Ice Lucy Ann Trudeau vs Liz Rouselle. WIN for Rouselle. Tough night for the Trudeau crew, falling to the tough and seasoned Rouselle rink. But, Team Trudeau are no pushovers either. They have lots of game. And why wouldn't they...both Lucy Ann and Akeshia play three nights a week and they certainly have their moments of greatness. It's the "Moment Of Greatness" Award for them. Enough to make Shizzy brown break away from the Hip Hop and take up 'Hack Hop'!

So that's how the ends played out this week in the Tuesday Ladies. I cannot stress enough how important the Ladies League is to the club. The BRCC ladies have many functions in the club and without their help, it would be difficult. It's not just a numbers thing, it is for all they do around our cool, little club. BRCC ladies rock it...week in and week out!

Olympic Pretrials Action...After Day One

Brad Gushue. I have followed him since Halifax 2003 and have rooted for him countless times. I was in Hamilton at the Brier when he lost the final to Glen Howard and I felt his pain. But here is still is, grinding away...looking to recapture that Torino glory. On the first night of play at the pretrials, Team Gushue was on fire, beating Team Menard convincingly. They will play Team Higgs tonight in an A Event semi final.

It was not so great a night for Team Brad Jacobs, however. It started out like Jacobs was on fire as well as they quickly jumped to an 8 - 3 lead over Greg Balsdon. However, CCA rules state a team must play 8 ends regardless of the score so the Balsdon rink had no alternative but to stick with it. And wouldn't you know it, they must have found an extinguisher and put out the Jacobs flames because they ended up coming back to win in the 10th by a score of 10 - 9. It only goes to show that early big leads are often difficult to defend. It also shows that it's never over till it's over!

In other action, the newly formed John Morris rink won over Greg Rumfeldt 10 - 2. Never a doubt in that one...Morris got up early and never looked back.

In a tight match that came down to the last end, Team Higgs won over Team Kean 6 - 4.

Although I would have loved to see the live action, there was a site I found via the Curling Zone that gave online play by play commentary and even had a diagram showing where the rocks were (updated shot by shot). There was even a place to add your own comments. It was fun for sure. Want to check it out? Go into Curling Zone and look for the game listed under the forum section. Monday Mixed

Tracy Horgan. Skip for Team Horgan is one up after the first Womens' draw at the Olympic Pretrials in Kitchener. This afternoon, this Sudbury crew posted the win over Valerie Sweeting and her Alberta squad. A great start for Horgan in knocking off a tough customer. Another Northern Ontario team, Team McCarville from Thunder Bay also won their game against Crystal Webster, another solid team from Alberta. So it starts....tonight's matches will have Brad Jacobs taking on Greg Balsdon while my beloved Gushue is playing against Jean Michel Menard. Both Gushue and Jacobs are my picks to come out of the pretrials on the Mens side. Although there is no live streaming, you can follow the line scores via the Curling Zone...Everything curling! Great site for keeping up with the curling world. Of course, another site for keeping up with the curling world is the BRCC! Lots of people there who can fill you in on curling news, and even give you a game. There were lots of these kind of people out last night at the BRCC, talkin' and playin' the Roaring Game.

Ice A: Glen Austin vs Jerry Jensen. WIN for Austin. No Red Bum Award here, this one was close most of the way with good shots being made by both sides. But in the end, the Jensen crew were forced into second place. Newer curler, Wendy Smith played in the vice position last night. I believe it was her first time. On several occasions, Wendy rose to the occasion as she made some tough shots that were asked of her. No small task when you are new to a back end position. It's the "Like A Rock" Award for her. Bob Seger sends his regards.

Ice B: Hailey Horton vs Michel Rivard. WIN for Rivard. With Michel conspicuously absent, it was Ron Forest at the helm and leading his team to a win. But they did not run away with it...the juniors stayed with them and forced some good shots to be made. However, in the end, the Rivard rink prevailed. In case you don't know Ron Forest, he is a longtime member of the BRCC. He is another of those BRCC mainstays that has given so much of himself to the BRCC over the years, that the BRCC will never be out of his debt. Ron curls in the Thursday Mens and is one of the main ice guys at the club, spending most mornings there working on the ice and helping to maintain the club. Much of what he does is not readily noticeable if you are looking for him, because he is usually there when most others are not. However, when you walk on the ice and play a game (or practice), his presence becomes known at once. The ice has been fantastic all season long and it is due to Ron's efforts, as well as others, that we can enjoy such excellent curling conditions. So, it's the "You've Got A Friend" Award for him. It's enough to make James Taylor try a slide.

Ice C: Ryan Hagger vs Andrew Roberts. TIE GAME. This one stayed close the whole way through and that's all you can ask when you are looking for an exciting game. It's awesome when close games happen...it draws everyone into the game. Blowouts can be boring but never close games. Ask Natalie Bray, she plays lead for the Hagger crew. Natalie is relatively new to curling but she enjoys getting out there and playing a game. It's the "Can't Stop Me Now" Award for her. I'm sure Rod Stewart would have to agree.

Ice D: Craig Roberts vs Dan McMillan. WIN for McMillan. The McMillan crew always have game and they are a tough team to beat. Not surprising really, this squad is comprised of seasoned players who are good at curling. One of the team members is Mary Shamas. Mary has had a love affair with the Roaring game for a number of years now and she finds the time to play despite a very busy schedule. I would have to consider Mary to be a fellow curling chronic. She plays as much as she can and she likes to attend the bigger events and watch live, and I have no doubt that she watches alot of TV curling. So, it's the "My First, My Last, My Everything" Award for her. It's enough to make Barry White quit croonin' and start curlin'!

Ice B (Late): Bob Villeneuve vs Gator Fortin. WIN for Villeneuve. The Villeneuve squad continue to be a tough crew to contend with in this league. Tough night for the Fortin squad but they don't mind, they come to have fun and that's the bottom line. And this Fortin crew knows how to enjoy themselves...they do it week in and week out, year in and year out. What an awesome squad...everyone likes to play against them...win or lose, there will definitely be some laughs. It's the "We're Here For A Good Time" Award for this foursome. It could be that this crew was what Trooper had in mind when they wrote this tune!

Ice C: Lucy Ann Trudeau vs Joanna Hammond. WIN for Hammond. Full marks to the Hammond rink, because they knocked off a tough customer. Yes, the Trudeau rink is comprised of some good players so for Team Hammond to pull out a convincing win is a feat. Good job by these guys and gals. You know, hats off to Joanna Hammond. She plays Tuesdays with the Juniors and Mondays with a newer team. If any of these players on either night catch her enthusiasm for the game, they'll be hooked for life. If you have ever played against Joanna, you will know she is totally into the game and steadily learning. Here is another player just full of potential and completely focused. It's the "In The Mood" Award for her. It's enough for Glenn Miller to toss his conducting baton and grab a Balance Plus brush (with an EQ head of course).

So that's it. Another Monday night over. TV curling will resume this weekend on TSN as the Pretrials will be broadcast on the 9th and 10th. Check out the TSN curling schedule for the times.

Thursday Mens

Here's a curling demonstration outside a casino on Fremont Street in Vegas. This is a booster for the Continental Cup of Curling coming to the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, Jan 16 - 19, 2014. This event sure has attracted alot of people. The Orleans Hotel is across the street from the venue and is now full for this time period. Packages are now on sale for the Continental Cup but the hotel is the Gold Coast, a sister hotel of the Orleans.

There are 16 of us going from Blind River, that I know of. We are all stoked. The curling will be excellent entertainment held in one of my most favorite cities of all time. But, Blind River is another one of my favorite spots as well, and the BRCC is my favorite club. And I'm not alone, there are 21 teams in the Thursday Mens that feel the same way. And they were out last Thursday, jostling for positions on the leader board.

Ice C (Tuesday): Dan Berthelot vs Rick Berthelot. WIN for Rick Berthelot. In this battle of the brothers, it was Rick and his crew posting the win. Marshall Chow plays on this team, and he has played with Rick for quite a few years now. Marshall is an avid curler and he is also a very consistent curler. He quietly goes about his job of getting it done for his skip and can always be counted on for a big shot. He dons his trademark fingerless gloves and puts his head down and pounds the ice when asked to sweep. It's the "Everything's Going To Be Alright" award for him. Bob Marley  might have been motivated to tie back his dreads and git sweepin'!

Ice A (Thursday): Andrew Roberts vs Chris Astles. WIN for Roberts. Team Roberts are having a good season thus far and the decision to put Andrew at the helm seems to be paying dividends. So, it's the "Take The Money And Run" award for these guys. Enough to make Steve Miller sell his guitar and buy a stabilizer.

Ice B: Tom St Jules vs Brian Tonelli. WIN for St Jules. The Family Jules continue to roll along. Tough night for the Friendly Giant and his squad. They will need to dig deep and bring it around which is something they are well capable of. It's the "I Can See Clearly Now" Award for them. I'm sure Johnny Nash would share a cup of focus with them!

Ice C: Keith Rouselle vs Al Viel. WIN for Rouselle. The Molson Exers manage to pull this one out in a come from behind effort. The Molson Exers are always up for a game and they like to have alot of rocks in play if they can manage it and wait for the chance to pop a big end. This opportunistic style of play often pays off for them and they are always in the mix on the leader board. They are just waiting for their ship to come in so it's the "Up She Rises" Award for them. I'm sure Bob Porter would be on board.

Ice D: Chris Zagar vs Jeff Mitchell. No Intel. I'm not sure how this one turned out. The game got called at one point but it seems another end got played and the winner of that end would be declared the winner of the game. Not a typical way to play but these guys weren't too concerned. They were having fun doing their own thing. Kudos to them. It's the "It's My Life" Award for both these teams. Bon Jovi would agree.

Ice A (Late): Francois Lemieux vs Craig Roberts. WIN for Lemieux. Tough night for the Roberts squad. They are playing real good curling these days and I look for them to move up the leader board as the season wears on. Hassan Aziz plays lead for this team. Hassan has been around for the past 3 or 4 years and I must say, it is great to see him around at the club. He enjoys playing curling and here's a guy who puts his heart and soul into it. Call him on to sweep. and you can be sure every ounce of his being is going into every brush stroke. It's the "All Of Me" Award for him. Matt Hammitt would no doubt endorse this one.

Ice B: Ben Lemieux vs Dave Mitchell. TIE GAME. The Robb Road Local stayed right with the current club champions and walked away with the tie. With the departure of Robin St Jules, the Lemieux rink did some shuffling and Dan Horton throws the third stones with George Morningstar as a new addition. They seem to have made the adjustment and are moving forward nicely. It's the "Making It Work" Award for them. I'm sure Doug and the Slugs wish them every success.

Ice C: Todd Swan vs Michel Rivard. WIN for Swan. This is really the first time out for the Swan crew. A couple of cancelled games slowed up their start a bit but out of the gate, they post a win. Todd was a member of the now defunct Rick Rouselle rink. With Mike McCoy, Rick Rouselle and Gary McLeod one a hiatus, Todd put together a new crew with Warren Neufeld and Rob Henderson. With these 3 seasoned players, I expect to see big things from these guys. It's the "If I Had A Hammer" Award for these guys. I'm sure Peter, Paul and Mary would be rootin' for them in the morning, rootin' for them in the evening, and all over this land!

Ice D: Yvon Valiquette vs Bob Villeneuve. WIN for Villeneuve. With Terry Fryer at the helm, the Villeneuve squad port a convincing win and have had a strong start to their season. Tough night for the Valiquette squad. This is a seasoned team and they have lots of game. I expect that as the season wears on, the Valiquette crew will find their rhythm and deal out some Red Bum awards of their own. It's the "Hells Bells" Award for these guys. Perhaps enough to make AC/DC's Angus Young  put away his shorts and suspenders and don a pair of Goldlines.

So, that's how the rocks curled for this Thursday. Once again, lots of good curling and great games on excellent ice. You cannot ask for more...but then, it's just business as usual at the BRCC!

Homan / Howard Winners of the First Slam

Team Homan. Winners of the Masters of curling this past weekend with a convincing victory over team Muirhead of Scotland. The Ottawa foursome were in control the entire game and never looked back. On the men's side, it was Team Howard winning the final over the Kevin Martin rink. So, after watching all the televised games, I had to wonder, who is the best on the planet in men's and women's? Really, it depends on the day. There are so  may good teams out there, it would be pretty tough to pick the best.

On the Mens side, there are the likes of Howard, Martin, Jacobs, McEwen, Stoughton, Gushue, Koe...any one of these teams could represent Canada in the Olympics. But on the international stage, there is Ulsrud, Edin and Liu that are tough squads and the Canucks will have to be at their best to beat them. The Chinese team, Liu, had an excellent showing at the Masters and showed the curling world that they are a world class team.

On the womens' side, there is Homan, Jones, Scott, Carey, Midaugh....many good teams. On the international stage, there is Ott, Sigfridsson, Wang, Siderova, Muirhead, Tirinzoni,....the list goes on. Although they did not win at the Masters, I'm thinking that the Sigfridsson rink from Sweden is one of the best teams in the world today. Granted, they have lost a couple of world finals, but they are ALWAYS tough and Maria Prytz, in my opinion, is one of the best shooters in the game today. That, of course, is not to take away from the others as any one of the big teams can beat the other on any given day.

What all this does make for is some incredibly entertaining curling. Curling at this level is at its best. And we as spectators are going to have an incredible year of curling to watch. The pretrials are coming this week and while I am excited to follow the teams...I am disappointed with the lack of televised games. My picks? Well, on the men's side: I have to pick Jacobs first. This squad are the current Canadian champions and they have been at the top of their game. This Northern Ontario crew has made their mark and they will be tough to beat. I would be shocked to see them  not make it to the Roar of the Rings. Second, it will have to be Gushue. These guys have a couple of wins this season and they look really good. After all the shuffles, Gushue seems to have found the right mix and these guys have a great chance to get to the Roar. And they have proven that they can beat them all. But then there is Menard and these guys can get on a roll as well. it would not surprise me to see them garb a spot..they are certainly capable. Then there is is the Morris crew...I don't know. Great team on paper but they have no time to gel and it will be a tough road for them.

On the womens' side, my first pick would have to be Team Scott. This squad is seasoned and I am thinking they will secure a berth in the Roar. The second team, however, becomes a toss up. Lots of good squads to pick from. The Bernard rink will be there  but I'm not sure if they can consistently knock off some of the more seasoned crews...like Tracy Horgan for instance. They have been to a Scotties before and they are regulars in the circuit. They will have to play well but they can do it. Then there's the McCarrville rink. I'm not sure about this squad, they have been around and Krysta McCarrville is a seasoned veteran and I like her. I'm just not sure if they will be consistent enough to make it through. I hope so. Of course, then you have Webster and Crocker. It would not surprise me to see one or both of these teams get through. They are tough customers and they will be focused on the prize, you can be sure of that.

So, it all starts tomorrow and the Road to the Roar opens up. You can keep your finger on the pulse of this tournament by following the line scores. If you google 2013 Road to the Roar, the site will direct you or you can go to Curling Zone and that will also provide you with the line scores plus much more!

Come Play Match Play and Support the Junior Ladies Team

You won't see this every day. Play suspended until penguins finish crossing. Or, perhaps they showed up to watch the game. Easier for them to watch a match than to fish and avoid seas lion attacks. Maybe they thought if they showed up for the game they might score a hot cup of coffee and some timbits!

Here's a new idea happening at the BRCC. It's Match Play. Awesome idea! The junior Ladies team of Hailey Horton, Tamarra Behnke, Julia Horton and Carlie Geoffroy are looking to raise funds for their curling initiatives this year and this is one of the ideas they have come up with.

You can sign your team up at the BRCC..there is a sign up sheet on the board just as you walk into the club, or call Hailey and / or Lisa Horton @ 705-356-2806. It is only $40.00 per team. You have to get your games played within a certain amount of time (just like golf). It's sudden death, so once you lose a game, you're out.

This is an "open" format. It can be Mens, Ladies or Mixed teams.  This is a great little side tournament and it will help out our junior ladies. The winning team will receive club jackets sporting the BRCC logo.

Sign up and participate in this tournament...show your support for our Junior Ladies team.
